Earl & Worm by Greg Pizzoli

Today I am sharing about the series Earl & Worm by Greg Pizzoli! Look at those cute covers and wonderful illustrations!

As someone who taught kids to read for many years, I was excited to see this delightful series! These sweet stories are great for kids and adults will be engaged with the humor. The books are targeted for kids ages 4-8 with younger ones listening and grade school children independently reading! The illustrations support the text and make it easier for beginning readers to understand the story.

Each book has three stories. These redemptive stories skillfully weave in themes of friendship, kindness, and making the most of every day. They will delight all readers and I highly recommend Earl & Worm by Greg Pizzoli.

I was gifted a copy and not required to write a positive review.

Earl & Worm The Bad Idea and other Stories.

Earl and Worm have been friends for a very, very long time, but their friendship had a rocky start. Earl is a happy go-lucky bird who plays saxophone to his plants because they love music in the morning. His neighbor Worm, on the other hand...well, Worm is the exact opposite. She would rather read in silence.

How will these very different neighbors become the very best of friends? With some sweet lemonade, the right shade of paint, and an unfinished poem, and most of all, sharing a little bit about themselves.

Award-winning creator Greg Pizzoli delivers three funny and heartwarming stories that will delight fans of other iconic duos like Elephant and Piggie or Pizza and Taco.

Earl & Worm #2: The Big Mess and Other Stories (Earl and Worm)

Earl and Worm couldn't be more different--but they also are also the best of friends. So when Earl's mess gets out of hand, Worm is sure she can help. And when a lucky penny turns rotten, rain-soaked Earl helps Worm see the sunny side. Through it all, the pair's funny hijinks turn tender . . . and the big mess ends up where they least expect it!

Come along for three giggle-inducing stories that will have kids hooting along soon after they've outgrown Elephant and Piggy.

The Redeemed Reader: Cultivating a Child's Discernment and Imagination Through Truth and Story by Janie Cheaney, Betsy Farquhar, Hayley Morell, Megan Saben

The Redeemed Reader Cultivating a Child’s Discernment and Imagination through Truth and Story is the book I wish had been around when I started teaching, homeschooling and parenting many years ago! It takes a deep dive into the world of children’s books from picture books through books for young adults, and asks the hard questions about content, where does your faith fit in, and allows you to think through your children’s reading choices. The book also encourages kindness to authors, loving your library, where to donate books, and managing your home library.

I found myself smiling, relating, and joyful while reading The Redeemed Reader Cultivating a Child’s Discernment and Imagination Through Truth and Story.  by Janie Cheaney Betsy Farquhar, Hayley Morell, Megan Saben. The book is thoughtful, well written and not preachy. I will keep it on my shelf for many years to come for the amazing book-lists, and reread to remind myself the importance of story in our kid’s world. I highly recommend and this will be a favorite of 2025 for me.

I received a complimentary ARC from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

Godfrey and the Great Cathedral Robbers by Maryann Sciolino

Set in medieval England, Godfrey is a nine-year-old stonemason apprentice who dreams of building a grand cathedral. Eventually, Godfrey is given an opportunity to follow his dream but quickly finds trouble as he learns of an evil plot to sabotage the building. It's up to Godfrey to protect the cathedral and save the town. Learn how a young boy discovers strength and wisdom while realizing his dream!

Godfrey and the Great Cathedral Robbers by Maryann Sciolino is a great elementary historical fiction book that takes place during the Middle Ages. The story is sweet and shares about Godfrey who is training to be a stone mason who wants more for his life. I loved how the various trades and roles of people in the Middle Ages were explored.

The story is perfect for 4–8-year old’s studying Medieval history.   It could be read independently by a seven or eight-year-old and read-aloud to 4–6-year old’s.  It has a beautiful moral and the illustrations support the text.  There are robbers, a gospel presentation, found family, and a great ending. I recommend Godfrey and the Great Cathedral Robbers by Maryann Sciiolino!

Congratulations to the author for winning second place in the American Christian Fiction Writers of Children’s Fiction Kingdom Kid Lit Contest for 2025 in the published readers and chapter books.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review.

About the Author: Dedicated to creating wholesome alternatives, Maryann Sciolino, wife and mother of five, paused her career as a registered nurse to provide a homeschool education for her children. Her years of researching literature to enhance their education spawned a commitment to create quality reading for young, impressionable minds. Experiencing the time-honored blessings of reading to her granddaughter galvanized her dedication to author a book that supports parents and grandparents training up children to know Jesus. Her first such book, Godfrey and the Great Cathedral Robbers, was inspired by the grace of God and the love of family.

Our Friendly Farmhouse by Melissa Ferguson & her children and illustrated by Gretchen Ellen Powers.

Our Friendly Farmhouse written by Melissa Ferguson & her children and is illustrated by Gretchen Ellen Powers. It is beautifully illustrated children’s book telling the story of the Ferguson family’s move to the country, how they built their home and changed their lives.

This is a beautiful children’s books with water color pictures that go perfectly with the text. The sweet story is appropriate for children four to eight years old, and your older kids will be listening in because it is so engaging. The book includes photos of the Ferguson family farm and shares a day in the life of their family.

Our Friendly Farmhouse would be fantastic to read as family, for fun, in a farm unit, comparing and contrasting the different places people live, and as a springboard for talking about big events in your own family. I might read to kids and then create a book or story about your own family.

What to do with your Whirly Swirly Thoughts by Jennie Allen illustrated by Nadia Gunawan

What to do with your Whirly Swirly Thoughts by Jennie Allen illustrated by Nadia Gunawan is a delightful picture for ages 5-8.  The book walks you through all the emotions, thoughts, and feeling you have and what you can do with them.  The story talks about what to do if your thoughts get too big and start to take over, you have a choice on what thoughts stay in your head, and some concrete activities for kids such as being thankful or physical activities.

I found this book so delightful.  What a wonderful way to talk to kids about their thoughts and start great conversations with them. I love the honesty and beauty of this book.  This would be perfect for elementary health, Sunday School, or to start conversations between parents and kids.  The pictures are stunning, engaging, and add to the beauty of the book.

I highly recommend What to do with your Whirly Swirly Thoughts by Jennie Allen illustrated by Nadia Gunawan.  This will be one of my favorite picture books of 2025.

You Quack Me Up for International Joke Day

Did you know today is International Joke Day? Comet insisted on celebrating International Joke Day by sharing 800 Animal Jokes For Kids : You Quack Me Up published by Tommy Nelson.

This is the cutest book for kids ages 5-11. My 13 year old and I laughed at many of the jokes together.  he book is filled with knock-knock jokes, riddles, limericks, and tongue twisters. There is also a section on how to write jokes. The layout is nice and easy to read.

I have found that kids love jokes and joke books are a great way to encourage reluctant readers and writers.   It would be fun to take turn reading them aloud to each other.  Kids love to write their own jokes and read them to you! This is a great way to encourage kids reading, writing, and share some smiles.

So to end with a joke. . . .

How do beavers surf the web?  ...........     They just log on!

Happy International Joke Day!

Atlas of Dogs & Atlas of Cats by Lonely Planet Kids.

Comet is sitting so nicely between the Atlas of Cats book & Atlas of Dogs written by Frances Evans and illustrated by Kelsey Heaton published with Lonely Planet Kids.  These are both gorgeously illustrated books and so well written.   The books are divided up into locations in the world and share about cats and dogs in each of these locations.

Comet was more impressed to learn about dogs.

These are gorgeous books with engaging illustrations, and are designed for grades 1-3.  But I think if you have a child very interested in cats or dogs you could easily extend that  to 4th grade.  Your preschooler-Kindergartner would enjoy having the books read aloud to them.

I also appreciate that the books are a great way to teach about book indexes, table of contents, and that you are able to skip around in certain non-fiction books to retrieve the information that you would like to know.  .

As an adult I enjoyed reading and learning more about  cats and dogs. My world was expanded!

These are fantastic books that I highly recommend!   Comet believes they will be a good addition your home library.

Elvis Presley --He is one of my dad's favorite singers. We listed to Elvis growing up.

Dwayne Johnson-- He is the Rock. My son is a fan.

There are so many great biographies in this series. They would make a great stocking stuffer or last minute gift for any 4-8 year old. Or to someone as a sweet reminder of someone they admire like me.

Discovering Christmas by Amanda Jass Illustrated by Marina Halak

Discovering Christmas by Amanda Jess illustrated by Marina Halak is a 25 Day Advent Devotional. This is a beautiful hardback book with gold embossing on the cover. Each day features a devotional, scripture passage, questions for discussion, things to do, and a prayer. (Read About It Talk About It, Go About It, & Pray About It) The gorgeous pictures enhance the book and you will want your children to gather around as you read.

I consider myself an almost expert on Advent books as I own over ten. I can confidently say I LOVE this one. It is easy to follow along, has good topics, and is so engaging. The book is designed for children ages 4-8, but I think you would be able to read with your children up to nine. This would be lovely to use at the dinner table around advent, at bedtime, or for family worship. I highly recommend Discovering Christmas by Amanda Jass!

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

I’m Amanda. A children’s author illustrator, wife, and mom of three girls ages eight & under. Being a mom is one of the greatest things ever, but it’s crazy hard too.

Between the discipline, dishes, tantrums, and messes, it can seem almost impossible to bring things like faith and fun into our days at home.
This is why I create engaging kids resources that you can trust to be consistent with biblical truth. Let’s ditch the overwhelm as we build sustainable rhythms in our homes, connect as a family, and help our littles learn about their Creator all at the same time!

Home is Right Where You Are :Inspired by Psalm 23 by Ruth Chou Simons

Home is Right Where You Are: Inspired by Psalm 23 written and illustrated by Ruth Chou Simons is one of the most beautiful picture books I have seen and read in a very long time. In the book you follow a child as the parent presents the paraphrased words of Psalm 23 to encourage and uplift a child.  The text and words are stunning!

I have reread the story about five times in the last week.  The words are very comforting and speak deeply to the heart of children and adults.  The watercolor pictures are stunning, peaceful and enhance the wonderful text.  I made my 12 years sit through the book because I wanted him to know the words from the story.

I would recommend this ideally for children ages 4-8 years old.  To me this a book you would buy for each of your children that they would take with them into adulthood.  My thought is that both the parent and child would treasure the memories of reading this together.

It would be lovely gift for a child’s a birthday, new baby’s arrival, baby shower or Christmas.  I highly recommend Home is Right Where You Are written and illustrated by RuthChou Simons.  This will be a highlight for me for 2024.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

Before I was a published author, I started a creative business called GraceLaced, and before it was a full-fledged company, it was a blog I spent 6 years writing on. In the years before the blog, I was just tinkering with creative projects after the kids went to bed.

And before I was creating in the margins, I was an unlikely new boy mom learning how to balance public ministry with my pastor + headmaster husband Troy (still my man, but no longer in these roles).

Further back, before I was a newlywed, I was an art major with big and impossible dreams… and even before I became an art major, I was a biochemistry major, secretly delighting in writing and creating.

God weaves every part of our wanted and unwanted seasons into the fabric of the Story he writes for us! So, here’s to not skippin a paragraph or jumping to the end. He’s the Author of full-circle and he completes every story he writes.

Evan Miller is Waking Down by Jerel Law Book Review

Evan Miller is Waking Down by Jerel Law is a science fiction book for middle grade readers. Evan Miller discovers he is a dreambender and can go to real places in his dreams. The rulers of his home City 47 do not like this. He goes on an adventure to learn how to use his abilities.

My son was absolutely crazy about this book. He is not a big reader, but this story spoke to him. He said it is a great story! He told me he was very invested in the characters and cared what happened to them. The unique futuristic setting held his interest and he wanted to know more. It truly is a dreambending novel.

My son said he enjoyed the adventure, characters, and the unique setting of Evan Miller is Waking Down by Jerel Law. He recommends it to all middle schoolers.

We were given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

Jerel is an author and a pastor, which means he is passionate about telling stories of redemption, hope, and purpose…especially stories about God working through really difficult things and through people who aren’t perfect.

In his words:
“Fiction, when written well, is a made-up story about things that are deeply true. My goal is to always write about things that are true and connect with the reader in a meaningful way. I hope they’ll start to see the world differently in some way through these stories.”

“Jerel Law transports readers to a place where supernatural forces of good and evil collide. Young readers will be entertained and inspired. I heartily recommend this series.”

K9 Mattis on the Job! by Mark Tappan Illustrated by Donald Wu

Here is our sweet dog Comet sharing with you K9 Mattis On the Job by Mark Tappan.  This is a beautiful picture book that shares the world of Sergeant Mark  and K9 Mattis, the German Shepherd who works with Mark.  Mark is a police office and the story shares a day of his life with K9 Mattis.  The story is beautifully illustrated, written with engaging text,  and filled with "Fun Facts" about police dogs.   I learned so much from the story.

K9 Mattis  On the Job is appropriate for ages 4-8, but I think 9 year old's would enjoy sharing with a younger sibling. This would be a great way to share with children about police and the role they play in our lives, to introduce the idea of working dogs, and community helpers.  I highly recommend K9 Mattis on the Job.

I was given a copy of the book by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

Just in Case You Ever Feel Alone by Max Lucado

Just in Case You Ever Feel Alone by Max Lucado is a sweet picture book for children 2-8 years old.  This sweet story has gorgeous pictures illustrated by Even Tharlet. The lyrical story communicates eloquently to your child that you will be there for them and also that God will always be there for them.  I think the book opens up conversation with your child to talk about your faith, how much you deeply care for them, and remind them that they are never really alone.  A beautifully written story with gorgeous pictures!

I highly recommend Just in Case You Ever FeelAlone by Max Lucado and illustrated by Eve Tharlet. This would make a great gift for a grandchild, godchild, or any child that you treasure.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and best-selling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him.

As a writer, Max is known for combining poetic storytelling and homespun humor with the heart of a pastor. All of his trade books began as sermon series at Oak Hills Church, and his sermons all begin with Max asking himself this question: “What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?” He’s been dubbed “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today, and “The Best Preacher in America” by Reader’s Digest.

Only Light Can Do That by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, on light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. "  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Only Light Can Do That is a  60 day devotional.  Each day shares a Bible verse, a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, a story about Dr. Martin Luther King, and a prayer.  There are also biographies of others activities throughout the book.

I found this book very informative and thought provoking. It is a powerful book in that it helps children to think bigger and consider how they can make a difference in the world.  I enjoyed the themes of your worth, community, hope, forgiveness and reconciliation, compassion, courage, pursuing justice, sacrifice  and love in action.

For me the best part is the book is broken down into bit sized portions for kids.  I feel like this is a great way to open up discussion with your kids about forgiveness, reconciliation and topics that are not always thought of in daily conversation.

Only Light Can Do That a 60 Day Devotional is a great devotional for students age 6-12.  The reading level is 4th-6th grade.  I think it would make a wonderful addition to your family library.  I highly recommend.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a review.

What's in a Dumpling, Grandma? by Sandra Eide and illustrated by Linda Meeker

What’s in a Dumpling, Grandma is a gorgeous picture book by Linda Meeker and illustrated by Sandra Eide.  In our story Grey and Mila ask their grandmother to how to make dumplings.  The story shares how to make dumplings and takes the reader step by step through the process with a recipe for fish sauce at the end.

What’s in a Dumpling, Grandma is beautifully illustrated.  The pictures draw you into the story and you can not help, but smile as you read the book.  I loved the sweet relationship between the children and their grandmother.  Though the story shares about making dumplings, but it is truly so much more.   It shares themes of family, love, and celebrating traditions.

What’s in a Dumpling, Grandma is a charming story with beautiful illustrations, relatable themes, and celebrates family.  I highly recommend.

I was given a complimentary copy and not required to write a review

Marvel at the Moon by Levi Lusko with Tama Fortner illustrated by Catherine Pearson and Tim Bradford

Review: Marvel at the Moon by Levi Lusko with Tama Fortner illustrated by Catherine Pearson and Tim Bradford is a 90 day devotional book. Each day which is a two page spread contains a topic related to space, a verse, an interesting fact about space and a prayer. The topics included are space facts, famous women and men in space, and what you need to know if you lived in outer space. Fabulous topics for students ages 6-11. Students 9-11 would be able to read on their own.

My eleven year old really enjoyed this story. I loved the format and the beautiful two page spreads. The book is very inviting, and the illustrations are incredible. We are always looking for ways to expand our horizons, and a space devotional is a great way to do that.

This would be a great way to supplement your science curriculum, use a devotional, or wonderful starting point for discussion with your student.   I highly recommend Marvel at the Moon.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

The Indescribable Activity Book For Kids by Louie Giglio

The Indescribable Activity Book for Kids by Louie Giglio with Tama Fortner is a delightful activity book for kids ages 6-10. This full color book contains word searches, crosswords, games, puzzles, crafts, dot to dot, drawing, and experiments. The Indescribable Kids share science facts and lead you through the book.

This can be used along with the author’s devotionals or as a stand alone. As a certified teacher and homeschool mom I believe you could use the book as a science supplement for fourth grade and up and your curriculum for grades 1-3. It also would work well for activities for kids to do while waiting in appointments, church, during free time, travel, or anytime you need a quiet activity. Kids who like science will probably enjoy this book the most, but the colorful pages and variety of activities will appeal to all kids.

I highly recommend The Indescribably Activity Book by Louie Giglio.

Good Night Dude Perfect by Dude Perfect with Kristin Hilbert.

Good Night, Dude Perfect by Dude Perfect with Kristen Hilbert illustrated by Alan Brown is a good night book in the theme of Goodnight Moon.  The book is a history of the Dude Perfect group, shares some of their tricks, their mascot, inside jokes, and favorite things.  It is rather hilarious.  The pictures are bright and engaging.  The story is targeted towards their 4-8 year old fans. Though, I noticed all of my kids looking through it and laughing.

What always strikes me as I watch the Dude Perfect videos is that these guys take what they do seriously, but not themselves.  They try to have fun, do goofy things, connect with their audience, and believe in making crazy ideas come true.  The book does a good job carrying through with those themes.  If you are a Dude Perfect fan than you will really enjoy Good Night, Dude Perfect.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a review.

Here are some activities that go along with the book.
